Hollister Construction Services Joins TEAM Charter Schools and City of Newark Officials for Hard Hat Event at Newark Collegiate Academy
Sept. 20 event honored dedicated supporters of new charter high school
NEWARK, N.J., (Sept. 20, 2011) – Hollister Construction Services, a leading full-service general contractor and construction manager specializing in corporate, educational, healthcare, industrial and retail construction, joined representatives from TEAM Charter Schools and officials from the City of Newark for a special hard hat event on Tuesday, Sept. 20.
Designed to honor the supporters and partners who are working to realize the vision of constructing a new, 63,855-square-foot building for the Newark Collegiate Academy high school, the event provided attendees with a sneak peak of the facility, now under construction at 18-36 Norfolk Street in Newark, N.J.
To be operated by The Friends of TEAM Academy Charter Schools, the school will feature a four-story classroom building with a two-story gymnasium/cafeteria/auditorium for approximately 600 students. It is expected that the ground-up construction project will be completed in the spring of 2012.
"This event was an exciting opportunity to thank the supporters who have made this important project possible, while demonstrating to them the progress that continues to be made as we work towards completing this state-of-the-art facility for Newark Collegiate Academy," stated Chris Johnson, CEO of Hollister Construction Services. "At Hollister, one of our specialties is working with educational institutions such as the TEAM Charter Schools, and we look forward to continued growth in this area."
Hollister has completed a number of other education-oriented projects including an ongoing, multi-million dollar renovation effort for Farleigh Dickinson University; a satellite office and therapy facility for The Center for Autism in Philadelphia, Pa.; a ground-up, stick-framed children's day care for Onyx Equities in East Brunswick, N.J.; and the renovation of the Torah Academy in Teaneck, N.J. to accommodate enrollment growth.
TEAM Schools is a growing network of KIPP (Knowledge is Power Program) schools in Newark, N.J., providing students with a rigorous, college-prep education. TEAM's four schools currently serve more than 1,500 African American and Latino students. Ninety percent of the schools' founding class went off to college and 96 percent of this year's graduates from Newark Collegiate Academy are going to college this fall. TEAM has achieved this success while continuing to serve the students who need the schools most: 85 percent of the student body qualifies for free/reduced meals and 14 percent of students have special needs. Most of the students enter the schools below grade level in reading and math, but in a few short years, they prove that their zip codes do not determine their destinies, achieving at levels that outpace their peers in Newark and across the state. TEAM will continue to serve more students each year and grow to serve 10 percent of all Newark students in a K-12 network.
